Dear Future Me,
You’re an idealist. A visionary of sorts. You’re always looking for the next big thing. Sometimes, you just tune out the world and get lost in your thoughts.
You’re a contrarian and a dreamer. You question the status quo. You are always at odd with authority because you think bigger than the average joe, and that’s a great trait. Don’t be afraid to voice your opinion and share your mind with the rest of the world. People may think you’re crazy at first, but deep down you know what you are.
You’re afraid. I know your biggest fear is being forgotten. You don’t want to leave the world without making your mark. You want to change it for the better, and that’s admirable. Don’t worry. Just remember, touching one life can spark a change. Such an easy concept can get lost in a twisted world.
You’re a fighter. All of your life, you’ve planned for obstacles to get in your way. You never went around, over, or under. You always broke through. You never took the easy way out, so don’t start now.
You’re not perfect. I know you hold yourself to an impossible standard. You think that you should do no wrong. You blame yourself for things that are out of your control. Stop being so hard on yourself. You are going to make mistakes. Life is all about making mistakes and learning from them. Never forget that.
You’re a competitor. Ever since you were little, you’ve refused to give up until you succeeded. You keep playing until you win. You’re not wired to quit. It’s not in your DNA. Your competitive drive is your biggest asset and your fatal flaw, but it is you!
You’re a friend. People may take advantage of you, but it’ll be okay. Give to those who need. Take care of those who want help. You’ll always had a big heart. Even if you never learn the meaning of the word “no”, you’ll be just fine. Remember, it’s your heart that makes people love you.
Future Me, I know life is a rollercoaster full of twists and turns, ups and downs. I know life is a journey that can take you down several paths. You’re on that journey, finding your own path and trying to reach your destiny.
I also know that the world is a scary place. It can harden the greatest of individuals.
I’m writing to tell you to never let the world change you. You’re everything I said you were and more. Don’t let life put out that fire in your eyes. Never get complacent; it leads to mediocrity. You can always be better than the day before. Embrace failure, learn from it, and use it as a fuel for success.
Most importantly, always remember that there will be critics, detractors, and naysayers. I know that sometimes it may seem like they’re right, but NEVER be afraid to be great.
Love,
Samuel Malik Smith
