Every day, the future of the medical field is being made at The Univeristy of Georgia at the undergraduate level.
There is an organization aimed to help students with post-grad test prep as well as connecting them with professionals in their field: Minority Science Student Association (MSSA). MSSA strives to help all students whose major is based in science as well as healthcare.
The application process can be found online at ugascience.wix.com/mssa. The application consists of asking prospective students their name, major, year and intended career path. There is not a membership fee for MSSA this year.
Their first event of this semester will take place this Tuesday, September 15, 2015 with their fall social. Located at the Davis Life Sciences Building (right behind Aderhold Hall), the social will be an opportunity for students to network with professors and researchers across various departments on campus. The event will take place from 6-8 pm and the attire will be business casual.
As for general body meetings, third year public relations chair Makua Okoye says they will be set up differently than in past years.
“Our meetings will be every two weeks on a Wednesday and will rotate between a regular meeting and a workshop. These workshops will be aimed at helping students with professionalism, applying to summer programs, networking and test prep for exams like the MCAT, PCAT, GRE, etc.”, she said.
With the event this upcoming Tuesday, the first general body meeting will be held on September 23rd.
Though the name indicates that MSSA is only to aid students who identify as minorities in a racial sense, Okoye assures that they are here to help anyone who feels they are a minority in their field.
“For example, a woman of any race is a minority in say cardiovascular surgery, she’s eligible to be a part”, she said.
When asked about what would constitute a successful school year, Okoye said she wants every student to walk away feeling that they are not only better prepared for their future but reassured of their career path.
