ASU to hold annual “Africa Night”

Though the University of Georgia is a predominately white institution, it prides itself on celebrating the various, diverse cultures on campus. Through the International Student Life Office, organizations bring the culture of students’ native countries to them without them having to leave the UGA campus.

Throughout the spring semester, various international and multinational student organizations will be holding “Ethnic Nights”. These events are designed to showcase their cultures to the student body and community.

On February 20th and 21st, the African Student Union will hold their annual Africa Night 2015: “Just A Woman”. The show will take place at Morton Theatre at 7 pm. The African Student Union is an organization committed to educating the community about Africa and African cultures through community service projects, educational programs and social activities.

Africa Night will be a showcase complete with African dances, a fashion show and the biggest production of the night: a full-length play titled “Just A Woman”. The play centers on a woman who struggles with balancing her business career with pressure from her family to become more domestic; she is the oldest of her siblings but has yet to marry.

Tickets will be $10 in advance and $12 at the door; for Friday’s show there will be a student discount for $7.

Though this is a show exhibiting African culture, the cast is not limited to just African students at UGA. There are students of all ethnic backgrounds participating in numerous capacities including those who are African American and Asian.

“Overall, I feel like the show has something for everyone,” said executive board member Makua Okoye. “We’ve been working hard since last September and we’re ready to show the community the beauty of African culture and educate them further about our people.”

Tickets can be purchased at the Tate box office; once again they are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. For Friday’s show, there will be a student discount for $7.
